GIFT OF LIFE IN THE NEWS

Tony Zino

1912 - 2001

We are grieved at the passing of Tony Zino on Saturday, September 29, 2001. Three children, his daughter Barbara and two sons Charles and Anthony survive him.

Rotary and the work of the Gift of Life Program was a major part of his life. Tony held many positions and titles in Rotary, President of the Manhasset Rotary Club, President of the Gift of Life Program and District Governor of Rotary District 7250. Tony was often referred to as "Mr. Manhasset" or the "Mayor of Plandome Road". His effervescent personality affected all he came in contact with. He greeted everyone with an infectious smile, flashing his sparkling blue eyes and always had a story to tell. He most often would engage in a conversation about the Rotary Gift of Life program.

As President of the Manhasset Rotary, it was Tony who approved a proposal by several Manhasset Rotarians to provide medical assistance to Margaret Rose Illukol, of Kampala, Uganda, in response to an article in the December 1973 Rotarian Magazine, "A New Face For Margaret Rose". Their effort on behalf of Margaret Rose eventually lead to Manhasset Rotary sponsoring open-heart surgery for 5 year old Grace Agwaru also from Uganda. From this genuine effort on behalf of a single child grew the formation of the Gift of Life Program that has since provided life saving open-heart surgery for over 2,200 children from over 50 countries.

Tony was always promoting the work of the Gift of Life. His energy breathed life into children worldwide. Shakespeare once said, "God gave us a memory so we could smell the fragrance of a rose in December." As our work with the Gift of Life continues, we will remember Tony Zino.
