Enforcement Run Raises Awareness of Gift of Life Program

Hershey (September
27, 2001) - About a dozen Pennsylvania State Police Troopers today
ran from the State Police Academy to the Penn State Milton S. Hershey
Medical Center to raise public awareness of Gift of Life, Inc., a
nonprofit organization that arranges lifesaving heart surgery for
ailing children form around the world.
Actor Chad
Everett, who serves as national spokesperson for Gift of Life, joined
Rotarians and representatives of the State Police and the medical
center in welcoming the runners.
Following a
ceremony, Everett toured the Penn State Children's Hospital, signed
autographs and visited children.
The Hershey run
was an offshoot of the third annual "Rotary-Law-Enfocement Gift
of Life 1,000- Mile Walk/Run" That began Sept. 11 in Evanston
Ill., and will end Sept. 30 at the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde
Park, N.Y. The event is designed to bring national attention to the
Gift of Life Program.
More than 2,000
children have been brought to medical centers in the U.S. and
elsewhere for heart surgery through Gift of Life, which was founded
in 1975 and is supported by Rotary Clubs worldwide. The Penn State
Children's Hospital at Hershey Medical Center is among more that 50
Hospitals involved in the Program. Participating physicians donate
their services.
"The
Pennsylvania State Police is proud to join with other law enforcement
agencies nationwide in bringing attention to this tremendous program
that builds bridges of friendship and peace by saving the lives of
children," said State Police Commissioner Paul J. Evanko.
Captain James
Braddock of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a Vietnam War Hero,
serves as coordinator of law enforcement in the 1,000 mile walk/run.
