Run for life

Chad Everett leads a group of South Bend police officers in prayer Thursday morning in front of the Sample Street police station before the group heads out on its leg of the 1,000-mile Gift of Life run. The third annual run, which began Tuesday in Evanston, Ill., and will end Sept. 30 in Long Island, N.Y., is conducted by law-enforcement officers and Rotary International to raise money to provide life-saving open-heart surgery to poor children around the world. Everett, who was born in South Bend, is a TV and movie actor who serves as a spokesman for Gift of Life.
